1st Vet Visit – Jan 30, 2024
The vet techs asked us our cats name and we said we didn’t have a name yet, and would they like to choose a name. They chose Robbie.
I was holding Robbie, when a piece of his hair was sticking out, so I pulled it. To my shock, pulling out the piece of hair revealed a large piece of skin, with hair attached, being pulled away from his body. It almost made me sick. The vet tech walked in and I showed him what I found. He took the Robbie in the back so they could shave that area.
The vet tech came back in with Robbie and I almost started crying. There was no hair on both shoulders and one leg. Our vet then came in and told us that he was in very bad shape and has a serious condition. She said his skin is peeling off his body due to one of two reasons - the first being thermal burn and the second being severe frostbite.
Our vet discussed Robbie’s blood work with us and the results did not sound good. But she believed a lot of the results were due to his current condition. On a positive note, he did not have Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Our vet then said she felt Robbie had a good chance of pulling through, then she said, “because you guys will be caring for him.” That sure lifted my spirits. Our vet gave Robbie a 2-week antibiotic shot and told us that we had to let nature takes it course.
Robbie is back at his new home
Our vet gave us Mirataz, an appetite stimulant, to give to Robbie since he is malnourished and needs to gain weight. Our vet also prescribed Buprenorphine for pain.
Robbie is staying in my bedroom, away from our other cats. There is a screen door that allows our cats and Robbie to see and smell each other, but not touch. I am hoping this will help everyone get along when I feel the time is right to let Robbie out of the room.
